Overview
The practical microbiology course is concerned with introducing the student to the laboratory devices and equipment used in the microbiology laboratory, and how to use a light microscope to observe microorganisms. During this course, the student will test sterilization methods in microbiological procedures, and how to isolate and grow bacteria and fungi on growth media. The student also learns how to diagnose the general morphological features of different microorganisms
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
A. Knowledge and understanding
A.1. Determines the uses of basic devices and equipment used in a microbiology laboratory
A.2. L the basic sterilization methods used in dealing with and studying microorganisms.
A.3. Learn the concepts of isolating, culturing, and counting bacteria and fungi
A.4. Describes the cell morphology of bacteria and fungi by microscopy and simple staining, as well as their colonies developing in solid and liquid cultures
A.5. Distinguishes the general characteristics of different groups of microorganisms.B. Mental Skills
B 1. Describes in detail microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) by viewing them under a microscope
B.2. Deduces the types of microorganisms by examining them with a microscope.
B.3. Suggests the best sterilization methods for materials and tools used in experiments.
B.4. Analyzes the reasons for the precautions to be taken in the microbiology laboratory
B.5. Evaluates and interprets results and information obtained from laboratory experiments.C. Practical & professional skills
C.1. Uses efficiently autoclaves, microscopes, scales, and other tools in the laboratory
C.2. Employs the appropriate tools and uses them in a right manner.
C.3. Practicing safe handling of microbes, using appropriate protective and emergency procedures.
C.4. Applies procedures to maintain sterilization and prevent contamination of sterile growth media and tools.
C.5. Stains bacteria with different staining methods for microscopic inspection.

D.1. Utilizes information technology to develop self-learning skills.
