Overview

This program (English II) aims at developing the students' scientific and vocational skills. It is specially designed to introduce the learners to the basic patterns of technical terminology at the introductory stage and thereafter deals with more advanced topics. Thus the students can go further and become creative by way of discussion and various original contributions to the materials. It also offers an opportunity for the learners to evolve their communicative competence and comprehend their departmental contents with a restricted period of time.

However, this course tends to give instructions to the learners in a variety of subjects such as:-

Intensive Reading of passages (texts) including materials to students' needs with comprehension questions, contextual references, vocabulary exercises and affixation and so forth.

The study of scientific and technical vocabulary which involves the use of dictionary, spelling, picking up the meaning form the context, rules of affixation, etc.

Description of the laboratory experiments.

Revision and study of basic English verb tenses, active and passive voice in scientific technical English.

The English noun phrases, relative clauses, deletion of relative relation in active and passive voice.

The study of English pronouns, adjectives, adverbial phrases, etc.

Summary Writing.

Intended learning outcomes

A. Knowledge & Understanding A.1 The ability to paraphrase the information obtained by the student in his own style. A.2 The student should know the ways to comprehend and understand what he reads. A.3 Increase the student's achievement of general and scientific English vocabulary. A.4 Learn and memorize all scientific terms required to be learned in all scientific branches. Mental skills Helping the student to acquire appropriate skills in: B.1 Ability to use English for scientific purposes. B.2 Linking the topic of the lesson and reality, comparing them and thinking about solutions. B.3 Interprets scientific information in English. B.4 The ability to use vocabulary in sentences that are correct in terms of meaning and structure. Practical & Professional Skills C.1 The student must have a large amount of general and scientific information in the English language and the ability to use it. C.2 Proper and clear expression of his thoughts verbally and in writing. C.3 Using grammar in a scientific-linguistic manner in sentences that have simple and complex grammatical structures. C.4 Develop linguistic research skills and apply them scientifically. Generic and transferable skills D.1 Work in a team and overcome the confusion factor. D.2 The ability to use the dictionary (English – English) to search for the meanings of vocabulary. D.3 Ability to communicate in written and oral English inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures Open the door for discussion among students. Focus on asking questions and involving students in answering them.
