Overview

The Applied Poultry Breeding course explains the stages of development of poultry breeding and genetic improvement – enables the student to distinguish between qualitative and quantitative and how to inherit each of them – genetic parameters and how to estimate - identifies the selection methods and the advantages of each of them – methods of forming pure breeds and producing commercial hybrids.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

• Recognize the stages of development of poultry breeding and genetics.
• Determine the type and inheritance of economic descriptive traits in chickens.
• Distinguish quantitative traits, explain genetic parameters and how to estimate.
• Learn about selection methods used in poultry breeding and the advantages of each.
• Mention the methods of forming pure strains and producing commercial hybrids

b. Mental skills:

• Connect the stages of development of poultry breeding and genetics.
• Discuss methods of inheriting economic traits in chickens.
• Discuss the inheritance of quantitative traits, genetic parameters, and methods of calculating them.
• Compare between selection methods used in poultry breeding.
• Apply production methods of pure strains and commercial hybrids.

c. Scientific and professional skills:

• Use the sequence of development of poultry breeding to improve it genetically.
• Apply methods of inheriting economic traits in chickens.
• Apply the methods of calculating the genetic parameters used to improve quantitative traits.
• Propos a selection method to improve quantitative traits in chickens.
• Develop a scheme for the formation of pure strains and commercial hybrids

Teaching and learning methods

• Theoretical lectures based on good diction and the use of data show.
