Overview

Focus on the dairy sector in Libya and the world and the obstacles it faces- Understanding the physiology and reproductive management of dairy cattle- Physiology of milk secretion and influencing factors- Dairy cattle feeding-methods of breeding and genetic improvement in dairy cows for milk production characteristics, reproductive efficiency and growth

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

  • Learn about milk production and the most important breeds in Libya and the world.
  • Identify the factors affecting the fertility of dairy cows.
  • Review the stages of milk production and the influencing factors.
  • Adjust the nutritional needs of cows according to productive status and age.
  • Compare suitable genetic improvement methods for each trait.

b. Mental skills:

  • Enumerate the economic importance of raising dairy cattle.
  • Links environmental and genetic factors affecting herd fertility.
  • Explain the difference between milk production stages and their causes.
  • Select the best crops and forages to feed the cows.
  • Compare suitable genetic improvement methods for each trait to address the problems of low production.

c. Scientific and professional skills:

  • Design a typical dairy farm.
  • Suggest appropriate solutions to treat low fertility.
  • Design automatic milking parlors.
  • Suggest nutritional additions that increase the quality of the feed.
  • Decide whether to use crossbreeding or selection in the herd according to the target trait.
