Overview

The most important economic traits in farm animals- adjustment for environmental factors that cause differences in the records- Genetic concepts to genetically improve dairy cattle, beef , sheep, goats, camels and horses- The possibility of applying these concepts.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

  • Recognize the importance of economic traits in farm animals.
  • Determine the effect of environmental factors on the efficiency of genetic improvement.
  • Learn about ways to genetically improve farm animals (cows, sheep and goats).
  • Learn about ways to genetically improve farm animals (camels and horses).
  • Reviews ways to develop farm animal breeding programs.

b. Mental skills:

  • Compare economic attributes in terms of their importance.
  • Predict the genetic potential of animals after adjusting for environmental factors.
  • Propose different selection and mating methods to improve cattle, sheep and goats.
  • Propose selection and different mating methods to improve camels and horses.
  • Compare modern farm animal breeding programs to available local programs.

c. Scientific and professional skills:

  • Use his ability to distinguish traits that have a rapid response to genetic improvement
  • Develop a scheme for treating traits that have a slow response to genetic improvement
  • Apply the genetic evaluation and improvement procedure for cattle, sheep and goats
