Overview

The course of the physiology of milk production explains the anatomical structure of the mammary gland, and its growth and development during different stages of the animal's life. It also shows the hormonal and neurological effects of the biogenesis of milk and its release from the udder. It allows the student to understand the environmental and genetic factors that affect the curve of milk yield and milk production, as well as know and diagnose the most important diseases that affect the udder and ways to deal with them. It gives a general idea of the most important milking designs and modern automated milking techniques.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

  • Summarize the stages of development of the mammary gland for the embryonic stage - after birth - puberty - production - drying.
  • Explain the mechanism of neural and hormonal influence of the formation and ejaculation of milk and the factors influencing it.
  • Discuss the factors affecting the lactation curve and the study of the phenomenon of persistence.
  • Identify the most important diseases, and their treatment, and maintains the integrity of the udder.
  • Compare automatic and manual milking and suggest the most suitable design for the milking facilities.

b. Mental skills:

  • Discuss the structure, growth and development of the mammary gland.
  • Explain the factors affecting the formation and emission of milk.
  • Connect the body's nutritional needs with the body's vital functions to increase production.
  • Define the most important diseases, their treatment, and the means of health care for the herd.
  • Design a plan for the manual or automatic milking program and the design of milking parlors.

c. Scientific and professional skills:

  • Determine the relationship between the structure of the gland, its growth and development, and the neurological and hormonal influences on the productive process.
  • Diagnose the most important environmental and hereditary factors in the process of milk formation.
  • Apply scientific and practical standards in nutrition to increase production.
  • Suggest ways to treat and prevent diseases.
  • Apply the latest modern methods in automated milking.
