Overview

The course in physiology presents an introduction to the general structure of the animal cell and its general functions and biological theories related to it. It also reviews the importance of the nervous system as one of the most important systems of the body and the mechanism of nerve impulse formation in the body. It also allows the student to distinguish the vital systems in the human and animal bodies in terms of structure and general functions. In addition, it explains in detail the different endocrine glands, their hormones, their functions in the body, and the diseases resulting from the imbalance of their secretions. As well it discusses the concept of internal balance in the body and the mechanisms of physiological regulation.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a- Knowledge and understanding:

  • Learn about the general structure of the animal cell, the functions of the internal organelles, and the methods of transporting materials in/out of the cell.
  • Explains the structure of the nervous system and its importance in regulating the vital functions of the body and nerve impulses mechanism and the reflex arc.
  • Understand the most important vital systems in the body, their composition and their function within the body.
  • Identifies the types of endocrine glands, their hormones, their physiological effects on the body, and diseases resulting from hormonal deficiencies.
  • Knows the concept of physiological balance within the body and how the body's systems work to maintain homeostasis.

b- Mental Skills:

  • Discusses the internal structures of the animal cell and the methods of cellular transmission across the cell membrane.
  • Discusses the importance of the different parts of the nervous system and the mechanism of their regulation of body functions.
  • Compare the structure of vital systems in farm animals and humans.
  • Links between the hormones of each endocrine gland and the diseases resulting from their physiological imbalances
  • Summarizes the working of the various body systems to achieve inner balance.

c- Practical and professional skills:

  • Designs scientific models and videos that explain the structure of the animal cell and the methods of cellular transmission.
  • Apply some simple scientific tests that explain the reflex arc mechanism.
  • Applies some special laboratory tests to measure some physiological parameters of different body systems.
  • Diagnoses hormonal diseases based on the physiological concepts and pathological symptoms he studied.
  • Uses the principles of physiological balance mechanisms to achieve the best health and productivity for the animal.

d- General and transferable skills:

  • Communicates with colleagues to work in scientific and practical groups.
  • Adheres to the ethics of the university student in terms of discipline, attendance, commitment, and keenness on academic achievement.
  • Participates in related workshops.
  • Provides accurate scientific advice and information.
  • Uses scientific media and modern technology.

Teaching and learning methods

  • Theoretical lectures based on good diction and appropriate scientific and visual presentation.
  • Practical lectures and laboratory experiments to measure some physiological parameters in the body.
  • Giving presentations and showing educational scientific videos and models.
