Overview

The concept and importance of forest measurement, units used in measurements, measuring diameters, tools used to measure diameters, measuring tree heights, height measuring tools, estimating stemvolume for standing and felled trees, the importance and methods for measuring form factor, local and standard volume tables, studying the growth, yield and biomass, determination of site index and site class or quality, use of geographic information systems and remote sensing in forest inventory and survey.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course student will be able to:

· Explains the concept and importance of forest measurements, methods of measuring the diameters and heights of trees, and the tools used for that purpose.

· Mentions the methods for measuring stem volume for standing and fallen trees.

· Explains how to measure the volume of trees using the functions of diameter and height and how to derive production and volume tables. Methods for studying the form factor.

· Describes the effect of stand density on growth and stand stocks

· Explains determination of stand growth and biomass.

· Mentions methods of sampling in inventories and the modern methods used for this purpose.
