Overview

The Applied Animal Nutrition course explains rough and concentrated fodder materials and feed additives for ruminants and determines the nutritional needs to maintain the life, growth and production of milk cows. It also determines the nutritional needs of sheep and goats. It also enables the student to distinguish the factors affecting feed consumption and the microbial activity of the rumen and its importance in digestion and to know the appropriate methods to improve the quality of poor feed and agricultural waste to preserve the environment.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

  • Explain the types of feed and the importance of feed additives.
  • Estimate nutritional requirements for cows' life-sustaining, growth and milk production.
  • Estimate preservative nutritional requirements, growth, reproduction and production in sheep and goats.
  • Classify colonies of bacteria and protozoa and their importance for digestion in ruminants.
  • Choose the most effective ways to improve the quality of agricultural waste and straw, preserving the environment.

b. Mental Skills:

  • Classify types of feed and types of feed additives.
  • Summarize the nutritional needs of cows according to their age, condition and stage of production.
  • Summarize the nutritional needs of sheep and goats according to age, condition and stage of production.
  • Classify the types of bacteria and protozoa found in the rumen of ruminants.
  • Suggest the best ways to improve poor feed quality.

C- Practical and professional skills:

  • Suggest suitable and available types of feed materials and non-food feed additives.
  • Formulate balanced mixtures of diets according to the condition of the cows and the stage of lactation.
  • Formulate balanced diet mixes for sheep and goats.
  • Diagnose the most important metabolic diseases affecting ruminants.
  • Treat Poor feed with appropriate feed additives.
