Overview

The principles of animal breeding course explain basic information about theories and laws of inheritance of traits in farm animals. The use of statistics laws shows the determination of the hereditary characteristics of the population. It allows the student how to distinguish the causes of genetic similarity between individuals. It also identifies the basic knowledge of ways to develop animal populations and select animals according to their genetic distinction. And the methods used in improving the genetic characteristics of farm animals.

Intended learning outcomes

Bypass successfully this course, the student should be able to:

a. Knowledge & understand:

  • Know the stages of domestication of farm animals, theories and laws of inheritance.
  • Get identified with the most important theories and laws of statistics that estimate the features of the clan.
  • Determine the degree of similarity between members of the animal family in traits resulting from heredity.
  • Select the methods used to select genetically distinct animals.
  • Specify the genetic improvement method to be used.

b. Mental skills:

  • Summarize the genesis of animal breeding and the general foundations of heredity.
  • Discuss the most important theories that estimate the genetic parameters of the clan through the laws of statistics.
  • Plan to improve the breeds of local farm animals.
  • Suggest traits that are subject to genetic improvement.
  • Explain the yields of genetic improvement for different productive traits in an animal

c. Practical & professional skills:

  • Use the general principles of heredity in the field of animal breeding.
  • Develop a genotype chart, calculates gene frequency, and estimate genetic parameters.
  • Apply the principles and genetic foundations in the field of breeding and genetic improvement of farm animals.
  • Suggest methods for selecting animals according to their educational value.
  • Use selection and exclusion based on the genetic basis of animals.

d. Generic and transferable skills:

  • Work in a team to achieve the goal.
  • Communicate with colleagues, exchange ideas and scientific dialogue.
  • Adhere to professionalism and ethics of work.
  • Deal with modern electronic technologies.
  • Collect information and analyze data.

Teaching and learning methods

  • Theoretical lectures based on good diction and the use of the fat-blasting method.
  • Exercises, applications and assignments supporting theoretical lectures
