This course introduces students to basic
concepts and definitions in applied linguistics- methods of teaching French as
a foreign language - such as the concept of mother tongue, second language and
foreign language through a case study strategy. The course also introduces
applied linguistics and its objectives. This course mainly aims to help the
student to reuse the theoretical concepts studied during the lectures in
thinking about his individual learning of languages by presenting a written
text explaining his relationship to the languages he speaks or learns and the
strategies he uses. The course aims to enhance the student's abilities to think
critically in the field of learning and teaching languages.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the
student should be able to:
Distinguish
between the mother tongue, the second language, and the foreign language,
and identifying them through a case studies.
Remember the history of
the French language.
Distinguish
between stages of learning.
Distinguish between the external
and the internal motives in learning languages.
Distinguish between the
types of strategies.
Analyze his personal experience in learning language.
Teaching and learning methods
The
course is explained through a case study and put it forward for a discussion to
reach to the concepts to be explained, then by giving a lecture. Exercises,
questions and answers are also used in some of lectures.
Methods of assessments
Student assessment in this course
consists of five elements:
Attendance out of 5 marks
Case
analysis out of 5 degrees
Analyzing
his personal experience with languages and submitting it in writing, it is
out of 10 marks
Midterm
exam out of 20 marks.
Final exam (the written
exam), out of 60 marks.
