Overview

This course assists students to integrate knowledge derived from the bio/psycho/social sciences, psychology, nursing and current literature to achieve safe, competent care of pediatric patients and their families who are experiencing normal development and alterations in body systems. Course content is organized by the nursing process in order to achieve best practice outcomes for pediatric patients and their families.

The first part of the course deals with the peri-operative management of clients. This course is to prepare the students acquire appropriate knowledge, skills and proper attitude in the peri-operative care of clients utilizing the nursing process. This course includes a study of the patient's peri-operative experience, role and responsibilities of the surgical unit nurse, intra-operative nurse, and the post anesthesia nurse, principles and practice of sterile technique.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

1- Distinguish the 3 phases of the surgical experience of the client. Identify appropriate

surgical classification and pathological process of client’s surgical experience

2- Summarizes the preoperative preparation of the client for surgery. State the

responsibilities of each member of the surgical team.

3- Explain maternal problems complicating pregnancy. Explain the pathophysiology and etiology of the various pediatric disorders.

4- Recognize the signs and symptoms of every pediatric disorder.

Mental skills:

1- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills and attitude in meeting the specific needs

2- and problems presented by the surgical client during the total surgical experience.

3- Formulate nursing care plan for each of the three phases.

4- Identify nursing responsibilities to prevent postoperative complications

5- Assess the gestational age of a pregnant woman through history taking, & other methods of data gathering technique.

6- Formulate an appropriate nursing care plan for a specific pediatric disorder.

7- Formulate a plan of care in providing care for pregnant mothers with bleeding problems.

Scientific and professional skills:

1- Perform a thorough assessment of client preoperatively and postoperatively.

2- Demonstrate the principles used in positioning patients and the use of positional aids. Identify dangers of improper positioning.

3- Recognize & institute appropriate initial management for different gynaecological surgical emergencies.

4- Provide appropriate nursing care to pediatric patients of various ages with various disorders.

5- Utilize appropriate nursing intervention in caring for a pregnant patient with infections.

General skills

1- Utilize appropriate nursing intervention in caring for a pregnant patient with infections.

2- Prioritize time effectively to meet the needs of the client, family and the team.

3- Apply essential skills for assessment of Obstetric & gynecological problems in range of care settings.

4- Apply the nursing process to provide safe nursing care to pediatric patients with varied disorders.

5- Apply appropriate nursing intervention in caring for a pregnant mother with metabolic disorders.
