Overview

This course deals with pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and clinical/therapeutic uses of drugs. The focus is on how drugs effects, in addition to how to evaluate the effects of the drugs given to the patient. It also deals with methods of calculating drug doses, including calculating doses for Pediatric. A detailed explanation of the different drug groups is also given. Such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, local anesthetics, drugs that affect the heart and the vascular system, and anticoagulants, in addition to the different methods of administering the drug and the factors affecting it.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

1- Definition of pharmacology and terminology related to pharmacology.

2- Determine the factors affecting the effects of the drug according to the different methods of administration.

3- Determine the roles and responsibilities of nurses while administering medication.

4- Discussing the method of calculating doses and evaluating the side effects of the drug, the method of administering the drug and the nursing intervention.

5- Describe the different drug groups used for different body systems.

1- Apply concepts and principles of pharmacology to ensure proper use of drugs.

2- Apply the 10 rights in drug preparation and administration.

Scientific and professional skills:

1- Prepare, compute and administer drugs properly.

2- Utilize knowledge in carrying out doctors order preparation and administration of drugs.

1- Correct preparation of drugs.

2- Correct techniques and procedures in drug preparation.

3- Good communication skills, develop compassion in providing care to patient especially the children.

4- Exercise patience in administering medication to the patient, show confidence in providing health teaching regarding patient’s medication .

5- Display honesty in dealing with the patient and family regarding the care rendered.
