Overview

This course covers theories and concepts that will enable students to critically analyze the health needs and concerns of the individual, family and community with regards to clients experiencing high risk pregnancies and complicated deliveries. Classroom and related learning experiences will enable the students to develop skills, knowledge and proper attitude and values on health promotion and identification and management of risk factors that contributed to high risk pregnancies. It also deals with concepts, principles and theories of human behavior in the care of high risk women and unborn babies in relation to problems contributing to the development of high risk pregnancies.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

1.Identify the risk factors contributing to high-risk pregnancy .

2 .Enumerate specific clinical manifestations of each disorders, diagnostic evaluation and the related nursing responsibilities.

3 .Discuss the causes, signs and symptoms, diagnostics, nursing problems and care and management of each disorders during pregnancy with emphasis on prevention.

4 . Discuss the different categories of abortion and its care and management.

Mental skills:

1. Define Midwifery and enumerate the identified the role and function of a midwife.

2. Describe high-risk pregnancy including factors that contribute to its development.

3. Describe illnesses such as STD, hematologic disorders, renal/urinary disorders, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, neurologic disorders, endocrine disorders, and other disorders that can result in complications when they exist with pregnancy.

4. Plan nursing care for a woman with an illness during pregnancy.

Scientific and professional skills:

1. Create nursing care plan related to the disorder/disease discussed in the course particularly considering ethics involved in the care of clients.

2. Demonstrate correct procedures in dealing with clients with the specified disorders.

3. Apply principles of nursing process in the care and management of clients.

4. Perform different nursing procedures needed by the patient with disorders discussed in the course.

General skills

1. Modifies if needed the treatment and management of disorders of women during pregnancy with the collaboration of the client, family and community.

2. Accept professional responsibility in the care of high-risk pregnant women with disorders of the body systems.

3. Apply essential skills for assessment of the progress of labor while communicating effectively in a variety of settings with different range of individuals and cultural groups.

4. Collaborate with other members of the health care team or participate actively in the plan of care with other members of the health care team.
