Overview

This course focuses on:

  • Distinguishing between illnesses that require a referral to a specialist, and symptoms or minor cases that can be treated with self-care
  • Training students on how to advise and educate patients on the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
  • Respond to and effectively manage minor illnesses and treat them using over-the-counter medications
  • Using the knowledge and skills acquired in this course to embody the pharmacist's role in the patient's self-care.
  • Knowing the tests and diagnostic devices that the patient can perform and/or use in the pharmacy and/or at home.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be

  • Familiar with simple and minor cases related to the different forms of pain and fever, upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, skin, ear, and eye.
  • familiar with the devices, home diagnostic tests, and services provided in the community pharmacy such as assistance in smoking cessation and self-medication in pregnancy.
