Overview

The course will introduce students to phytochemistry;  including the active substances in plants, their classification, how to extract them, and the general benefits of plants to the human, also Students will acquire knowledge that enables them to distinguish volatile oils and glycosides and their classifications, methods of extraction, in addition to their benefits and their medical use. Besides providing a comprehensive overview of carbohydrates, their classifications, methods of extraction, and their benefits on humans and animals.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Recognize the general terms of volatile oils and glycosides.
  2. Able to formulate laboratory reports in the appropriate form and reach logical conclusions about the studied topics.
  3.  Able to conduct laboratory tests to distinguish and recognize the studied substances.

Teaching and learning methods

The course includes several methods of teaching, which include:

  • lectures.
  • laboratory experiments.
  • Group discussion.

Methods of assessments

The students' knowledge and performance about the studied topics are assessed throughout the study period. These assessment methods include the following quizzes, practical exams, oral and written exams.

  • Mid-term exam =20%
  • Practical exam =20%
  • Activities and reports = 20%
  • Final exam = 40%
