Overview

  • the students will be able to describe the history and scope of pharmacognosy.
  • students will be able to describe many medicinal plants as an important source of medicines in terms of their classification depending on the different parts of the plant ( leaves, fruits or seeds), their components, and their traditional use

Course outline

  1. General introduction: scope of pharmacognosy, definitions, classification, and introductory to methods of extraction.
  2. Leaves, herbs, bark, and roots, in addition to flowers, fruits, and seeds.
  3. Libyan medicinal plants

Intended learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • .Describe the development of pharmacognosy
  • Differentiate between different organs of a herb, identify active constituents ، describe micro- and macro-morphological features of medicinal plant

Teaching and learning methods

Material for this course will be presented using multiple teaching approaches: lectures and discussions, practical experiments, quizzes, and written assignments.

Methods of assessments

The students' knowledge and performance about the studied topics are assessed throughout the study period. These assessment methods include the following quizzes, discussion sessions, oral exams, and written exams (grand total mark 100%)
