Overview

In phonetics 2, students are introduced to syllables, word stress and sentence stress. The course also concentrates on showing students different sounds of consonant clusters, discussions of different aspects of connected speech and the different types of intonation. Practice exercises on pronunciation and transcription of sentences and paragraphs are also found in this course.

The course aims to:

1. polish students production of the spoken language using the skills they learned in Phonetics 1 together with the new skills acquired in this course;

2. provide students with practice exercises in identifying syllables, using stress in words and sentences, and in using different types of intonations;

3. allow students to practice in transcribing sentences and paragraphs with ease;

4. assist students to improve their performance in problematic areas of pronunciation through additional relevant exercises.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will:

1. Know the term syllable.

2. Mention the types of syllables.

3. Determine the number and types of audio passages in English words.

4. Write the audio passages with their used symbols (phonetic transcription)

5. Interpreting aspects of the conversation fluently

6. Know the concept of intonation and its types.

7. Speaking English in a good pronunciation in terms of stress and sentence intonation
