Overview

After a short introduction to what Phonetics is all about, the course provides discussions on the place and manner of articulation of the speech organs, the consonant and vowel sounds in English and presentation of the Cardinal Vowel Diagram. It also provides practice to improve the students’ pronunciation skills.

The course aims to:

1. Provide the learners with the knowledge of phonetic system.

2. Draw illustrative diagram to phonetic symbols and organs of speech responsible for production of sounds.

3. Present different types of consonants and vowels.

4. Pronouncing consonant and vowels in a right way.

5. Familiarize the learners in the transcription of consonants and vowels in words.

6. improve students production of the spoken language.

7. Train students to use dictionaries to look for the pronunciation of words.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

1. Recognise and differentiate between consonant and vowel sounds.

2. Recognise the organs of speech.

3. Speak with correct language in pronunciation.

4. Transcribe the English words phonemically.

5. Compare and recognise different accents of English.
