Overview

This course is further develops students’ appreciation and understanding of literary works. It continues to familiarize students with other periods and works of other writers with more in-depth study. The study of prose fiction is central to this course.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course students will be able to :-

1. read and analyze literary works

2. improve their reading

fluency and accuracy

3. discuss themes, literary devices, style, and historical influences in short stories,

Plays and novels.

4. respond reflectively in writing, with a minimum of grammatical error, to prose fiction

5. improve their understanding of literary texts.

6. analyze and interpret literary texts.

The course aims to cover the following:

1- A survey of English literature from 18th century to modern time.

2- Introduction to short story.

3- Elements of short story.

4- The study of two short stories by major writers of the genre.

Earnest Hemingway’s ‘Cat in the Rain’

5- Introduction to drama.

6- Elements of Drama.

The study of one-act play by a major writer of the genre.

Othello's Shakespeare play

7- Introduction to the novel.

8-Elements of the novel.

The study of one short novel by a major writer.

George Orwell’s Animal Farm

Students may be asked to prepare a paper "assignment" on one of the literary types they study in this course.
