Overview

The course Grammatical Structures (1) aims at introducing the different types of English sentence structures. It begins with presenting types of sentences and pointing out phrases and clauses as basic sentence components. The course then proceeds placing special focus on English phrases such as noun phrases, gerund phrases, participle phrases and infinitive phrases. The students learn the structure of these phrases, their modifiers and their functions inside sentences using tree diagrams as an analytic tool for understanding phrases. The course incorporates practical tasks that aim at integrating grammar knowledge with the different language skills. In these tasks, students are requested to use the different English phrases in their speaking and writing as well as identifying them in a variety of reading materials.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student must be able to:

1. Understand & identify the different types of clauses, sentences and phrases

2. Recognize noun phrases as an important component of a sentence together with their modifiers, their functions inside sentences.

3. Recognize the second important component of a sentence i.e. Verb Phrases and comparing finite verbs with non-finite verbs.

4. The use of non-finite verbs and their functions in sentences namely: gerunds, participles and infinitives.

5. Produce tree diagrams that represent sentence components.

6. Use the different sentence components in their speech and writing.

Identify the sentence components in a variety of reading materials.

Teaching and learning methods

The course will be presented to the student through a variety of deductive and inductive grammar lessons. It will employ lectures, PowerPoint presentations, discussions, group work, and home assignments.

Methods of assessments

Methods of evaluating students in this course:

(class work 40% & final 60%)

Class work: is divided into: 1- Written midterm 2- Short quizzes 3- Home assignments (40%)

Written final exam (60%)
