TR203 : Introduction to Linguistics

Compulsory

This course introduces students to the basic principles of linguistics as a perquisite in the process of language teaching and learning.

This course attempts to achieve the following goals:

· to shed light on the unconscious knowledge humans have.

· to help students understand how humans acquire language

· to help students observe how human communication differs from animal communication.

· to help students draw conclusions about the general nature of human language.

This course is both lecturer –centered and learner–centered. This is done through a series of procedures including:

· Topics are sent to students in advance via the class Telegram group.

· The lecturer introduces the topic.

· Students read the text.

· Together with the students, the lecturer discusses the important concepts in more detail.

· The lecturer checks students' understanding of the topic given by asking them some questions that they have to answer orally in class.

Students' progress is evaluated according to their performance in written mid-term and final examinations.
