Overview

The course aims at introducing students to the field of translation as a craft and an area of research. This introduction provides students with the basic concepts of translation as a process and as a product. Students should also be provided with linguistic concepts related to translation as well as concepts from other related disciplines. The course also introduces students to the links between translation and other components such as culture, terminology and lexicography.

Intended learning outcomes

• Realizing that translation is a complex mental process and not just a mere transfer of texts between different languages.

• Students should be able to distinguish between the translator and the person who speaks more than one language.

• The ability to analyze texts for the purpose of the translation.

• Realizing that the challenges translators face are not only linguistic but can also be social or cultural in nature.

Teaching and learning methods

The main teaching method of this course is lecturing. However, students should participate in seminars and workshops to enhance their understanding of the themes raised in the lectures

Methods of assessments

Students are assessed and evaluated through two exams i.e. the Mid-term Exam (40 marks) and the Final Exam (60 marks). Each of which includes two different sets of questions for students to choose from and respond to.
