Overview

1- This course aims to introduce the field of terminological studies to the students of the Department of Translation as a field of knowledge independent of language studies in general, and also because it includes practical applications for formulating terminology, which is an integral part of the translator's work.

2- It aims to educate students about ways of formulating terminology in Arabic and English.

3- It also aims to educate students about the applications of specialized dictionaries and how to build databases.

Intended learning outcomes

1- The student should be aware of the relationship between translation studies and terminological studies.

2- Students should be familiar with the theoretical concepts and principles of terminology as well as the practical aspects of formulating terms and making specialized dictionaries.

3 - Familiarity with the relationship between terminology studies and lexicology, and clarify the types of dictionaries and their functions.

Teaching and learning methods

• Lecture, explanation, and examples in the chapter.

• Training on derivation, carving, and metaphor in formulating terminology with applications in the classroom and outside the classroom.

• Involve the student in the applications by selecting one of the specialized dictionaries and classifying its terms according to the way those terms are formulated.

The first assessment is a written test

Basic sources and references for the course

The content of the course is collected by the lecturer from a variety of sources: textbooks, and studies in various journals (Al-Lisan Al-Arabi, the Journal of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo...etc.)
