Overview

This course aims to introduce students to the origin of human languages and the linguistic theories that revolved around their origin identifying the relationship of language with other sciences, families of languages and the status of the Arabic language among the Semitic languages. In addition, students will be acquainted with the levels of linguistic analysis in general and they will be able to differentiate between terms. Students will realize the status of language among the other means of communication indicating the impact of language on thought. They will also distinguish between linguistics approaches, between linguistic schools, and between research methods used in the field of linguistics in general. It also aims to introduce students to some linguistic issues such as derivation, Arabization, etc.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify historical and modern linguistics and

2. clarify its objectives, principles and topics.

3. define computational linguistics, its origins and methodology.

4. identify the concept of modern Arabic linguistic research, its characteristics and models.

identify the possibilities of using computers in the linguistic fields.

Teaching and learning methods

The course will be given through lectures, panel discussions, or assignments and exercises.

Methods of assessments

Methods of evaluating students in this course: (semester work 40% and final 60%)

¾ Semester work: it is divided into written midterm exams and assignments.

Final: written final exam
