Overview

Course description:

In this course, students identify the Abbasid Literature, its history and the factors that were the reason of its renaissance in the first Abbasid era. They will also study about the political life, the social life, the conflict that was between the Umayyads and the Abbasids, and the reflection of that on literature of the Abbasid era. Students, additionally, will study some poetry and prose of the era.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify the political life and the social life and their impact on poetry and prose.

2. explain the factors behind the flourishing of poetry and prose.

3. explain the modern topics of poetry and link them to the old ones.

4. name some of prominent poets and prose writers of this era.

5. identify the types of prose that spread widely in this era

Teaching and learning methods

The course will be given through lectures, panel discussions, or assignments and exercises.

Methods of assessments

Methods of evaluating students in this course: (semester work 40% and final 60%)

¾ Semester work: it is divided into written midterm exams and assignments.

¾ Final: written final exam.

Factors of prose evolution and its prosperity: Oratory, sermons/ preaching and stories

Some prominent writers of the Abbasid era: Ibn al-Muqaffa,

Al-Jahiz, and Badiuzzaman Al-Hamdhani - The characteristics of prose of this era
