Overview

The Course Morphology 2 (Sarf 2) introduces students to the internal structure of words. It focuses on nouns starting with movement, shift and omission in defected nouns followed by learning noun divisions related to augmented vs. unaugmented nouns, and declinable vs. indeclinable nouns. The course also includes studying the different types of verbal nouns (Masdar) and other noun derivations such as the active and passive participles, attributive participles, excessive nouns, comparatives, miimi verbal nouns (miimi masdar), time and place nouns. The course finally covers broken plural and the rules of plurality and duality of defective noun declensions.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students must be able to:

1. Identify noun divisions and the changes that occur resulting from derivational processes.

2. Recognize the structures of augmented and unaugmented nouns in Arabic language.

3. Identify the prosodic templates of derivatives in Arabic language.

4. Recognize the different derived forms and the processes of deriving them

Apply the rules of duality and plurality to defective nouns.

Teaching and learning methods

The course will be presented to the student through lectures, panel discussions, assignments, and exercises.

Methods of evaluating students in this course includes (class work 40% & final 60%)
