Overview

The course aims to familiarize students with the issues of phonetic study by identifying how to produce sounds by explaining their places of articulation, their characteristics, and the differences they have within the phonetic context through the study of both phonetics and phonology. In general, this course aims to learn about the physiological, physical and auditory aspects of the linguistic sound. In addition, it focuses on the understanding of sound change rules (also known as phonological rules), syllables, phonemes, phonetic transcription, and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify speech sounds and how they are produced separately and consider the characteristics that distinguish each sound.

2. recall history of the phonetic study and the efforts of ancient Arab linguists.

3. describe and draw the organs of speech, know the articulations of sounds and their characteristics, and know the syllable structure in Arabic.

4. define the conditions of success and failure in speech operations, which helps them to understand the foundations of the Arabic language and to represent it with sound linguistic models.

5. explain properly all principles and thoughts mentioned by the morphologists and grammarians according to modern linguistics.

The course will be given through lectures, panel discussions, or assignments and exercises.
