Overview

This course introduces and defines clinical psychology, the clinical psychologist, and highlights significant neurotic and mental illnesses (definition, diagnosis, and treatment).

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Understand concepts and terminology related to mental illness.

2. Explain the types of tests used in diagnosing mental illness.

3. Become familiar with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

4. Describe the clinical indications in neuropsychological tests.

5. Realize the clinical signs of mental illness.

6. Deduce the underlying causes of mental illness.

7. Demonstrate the use of the DSM in medical evaluation.

8. Distinguish between psychological treatments provided according to type and severity of illness.

9. Analyse the differences between neurotic diseases and psychotic diseases.

10. List the stages of diagnosing and treating the effects resulting from misuse of psychotropic substances

11. Discuss, in a technical manner, the difference between a general practitioner, a psychiatrist, and a psychotherapist

12. Draw a moderating curve for the distribution of mental abilities, indicating special needs categories

13. Write a report on diagnostic evidence used in psychological assessment.

14. Search for and compile information on latest developments concerning chronic fatigue syndrome.

15. Use psychological treatment provided for particular mental illness cases according to type and severity.
